Currently, data security is crucial because our society has fully entered the digital age. This advancement enables data transmission in various file formats, such as documents, images, and videos. However, sometimes you cannot be sure how secure the files you open are. Although they come from a reliable source, you might not know if the source has problems.
We would like to introduce a solution that can address these concerns. Microsoft has recognized this issue and developed an application to enhance your computer’s security. It also allows you to open files you are unsure about or that come from unclear sources but still need to open. This solution is called Windows Sandbox. Microsoft has included this feature since Windows 10 Professional. Users can install Windows Sandbox via the “Add or Remove Features” option, as shown in the image below. Follow the installation steps and restart the computer. After that, Windows Sandbox will be ready to use.
How to use Windows Sandbox
After successfully installing the application, you can search for Windows Sandbox in the Start menu, and the icon will appear as shown in the image.
Then, click on the icon to launch the Windows Sandbox for a new isolated Windows environment, as shown in the image below.

You can use this virtual machine without any connection to your main operating system. You can test files you are unsure about or install applications in Windows Sandbox without affecting your main operating system. If problems occur during testing, you can close and reopen it immediately. A new window will open every time you launch the Windows Sandbox.
Benefits of Windows Sandbox
Windows Sandbox is like a separate computer that operates similarly to the main environment, but it does not have the same applications. It is a clean environment running on the same Windows installation, offering the following benefits:
- You can copy files into the Sandbox using the clipboard, or copy data out of this virtual machine.
- You can run applications or files on this virtual machine without affecting the main environment.
- Once you close or exit the Windows Sandbox, all data will be erased. If you want to keep the data, be sure to copy it out before shutting down.
- It uses relatively few resources and can operate almost as quickly as the main environment.
Conclusion
Windows Sandbox is an application included with Windows 10 Professional and higher. You need to install additional features yourself. Windows Sandbox provides a new, clean environment for testing or running files you are unsure about without affecting the main environment. Once the application is closed, all data will be erased. To retain any data, you must copy it to the main environment before closing.
