Prevent Screen Capture – A New Feature from Microsoft Teams

Prevent screen capture

Today, work and learning can happen from virtually anywhere. That’s why Microsoft Teams has become a go-to tool for many organizations and institutions. It brings people together for communication, online meetings, and seamless collaboration—no matter where they are.

Microsoft Teams offers a wide range of features that support team-based work. These include video conferencing, file sharing, dedicated chat rooms, and seamless integration with other Microsoft applications like Outlook, OneNote, and SharePoint. Because of this, Microsoft Teams has truly become the hub of digital operations.

Recently, Microsoft has taken another step forward in enhancing security on Microsoft Teams. They have launched a new feature called Prevent Screen Capture, which is designed to protect the privacy of content displayed during meetings. This is especially useful in scenarios that involve confidential or sensitive information. This feature will be available globally starting in July 2025.

What Prevent Screen Capture Brings to Teams

It is a feature that blocks screen capturing of the Microsoft Teams application on supported devices, specifically on Windows and Android operating systems. This feature can be managed through Mobile Device Management (MDM), Mobile Application Management (MAM), and configuration settings in Microsoft Intune, which is Microsoft’s cloud-based endpoint management platform.

When the feature is enabled, the Microsoft Teams Window cannot be captured or recorded using standard screen capture functions, such as the print screen key or third-party screen recording applications. If someone attempts to capture the screen, the meeting window will turn black. This response helps reduce the risk of data leaks, whether the content involves chat discussions, confidential documents, or important visuals shown during the meeting.

When is this feature useful?

This screen capture prevention feature is ideal for organizations with strict security requirements, such as:

  • Banks or financial institutions
  • Government agencies
  • Companies protecting intellectual property
  • Organizations handling highly sensitive customer data

It boosts user confidence when presenting confidential information, such as financial reports or undisclosed strategic plans. In addition, it reduces concerns during meetings with external parties. This feature also enhances the organization’s cybersecurity image by demonstrating a strong commitment to safeguarding both client data and strategic information.

Limitations and Usage

While the feature significantly enhances security, it has certain limitations:

  • Not yet supported on iOS and macOS
  • Cannot prevent capturing by external cameras
  • Must be configured through the organization’s device management system
  • Cannot be enforced on users outside the organization’s control, such as external guests or general public meeting participants

Therefore, IT administrators should study configuration methods and define appropriate policies that align with the organization’s workflow.

The screen capture prevention feature marks another important milestone for Microsoft Teams in strengthening data protection. In a time when data can be leaked with just a few clicks, having tools to control access and prevent inappropriate data recording is crucial. This feature not only serves organizations prioritizing data security but also reinforces user confidence across all sectors.
