“FraudGPT”, the start of a new era of digital risk

ChatGPT is a famous and often-mentioned AI tool developed by OpenAI. It is a highly capable artificial intelligence (AI) tool and has been applied to various fields. ChatGPT can also be applied to software development.

However, on the other side of AI technology, it can also be misused intentionally to commit cybercrime such as the development of FraudGPT.

According to the report of Rakesh Krishnan, Netenrich’s security researcher, published on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, it is said that “This is an AI bot, specially targeted for offensive purposes, such as crafting spear phishing emails, creating cracking tools, etc.”.

The tool has been circulating on Dark Web Forums and Telegram platform since July 22, 2023. It is reportedly priced at $200 for a monthly subscription, $1000 for six months, and $1700 for an annual subscription.

The author also states that the tool could be used to write malicious code, create undetectable malware, and find leaks and vulnerabilities in the target system. Moreover, there have been more than 3,000 confirmed sales and reviews of FraudGPT. It is currently unknown what exact language model was used to develop the system.

Besides taking the service model of phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) to the next level, such tools can act as a free pass for new cybercrime actors looking to launch phishing and business email compromise attacks, leading to data theft and unauthorized bank payments.

At the beginning of July 2023, WormGPT, another AI cybercrime tool, emerged. It was advertised on many Dark Web Forums as a tool for sophisticated phishing and business email compromise attacks. Experts called it a blackhat, an alternative to the GPT model, which is designed for cybercrime.

Cybercriminals are known to be violating ChatGPT’s rules and restrictions by taking advantage of ChatGPT’s APIs. Both FraudGPT and WormGPT operate without ethical boundaries. This is enough evidence to indicate the threats posed by AI technology.

I think you are beginning to worry about cybercrime caused by AI right now. Is this truly the start of a new era of digital risk?
